New Integrated Course for the ICT Networking Pathway!

The Yolo County Regional Occupational Program (ROP) recently received “g” elective status for the new Internet Engineering 1 course from the University of California Office of the President.  School Boards across the state are looking to adopt courses that are integrated and that prepare students for both college and careers.

Internet Engineering 1 is an interdisciplinary course designed to prepare students for post-secondary success in the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) field. The course engages students with studies of:  the history and implications of network communications; the protocols which make the Internet possible; how networks provide access to services; and college and career preparation in the ICT field. This course integrates the theory and application of network communications, and exposes students to media that invites them to consider how Internet engineers think, design, and solve problems. Students have several opportunities to produce college-ready writing, collaborate, research, develop study skills, and develop 21st century skills in this course.

This course was developed in collaboration between two high school ROP/Career Technical Education instructors and a Community College Instructor, all from separate school districts. These educators each have a strong background in instructing networking communications technologies and w anted to develop a rigorous course that prepared students for college-level content and writing. Special thanks to CISCO for supporting the development of this course and for the exceptional leadership provided by David Bayne, Woodland Joint Unified School District and Yolo County ROP; Ben Crosby with West Contra Costa Unified and Contra Costa County ROP; and James Briano with Mission Valley ROP in developing this course. Students who take this course also prepare for taking the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) industry certification.

Students having the knowledge and skills to understand and operate networks are critical to California because our 21st century economy runs on digital networks. Organizations of all kinds depend on a workforce educated to design, build and operate these networks.
