There is a lot of interest in using online resources to augment classroom instruction, a popular term for online instruction now being used is “Blended Learning” where some instruction is from “on-line” and some provided by the classroom teacher.
I recently attended a briefing by Dr. Sandy Miller who provided background on the latest technology trends in California as reported in Project Tomorrow’s survey and research.
Some of the most notable data included the results from the parent sections of the survey (given at over 5,750 schools nationwide). Trends over time showed that parents understand the impact technology can have on student motivation for learning. An increase from 14% in 2006 of parents willing to purchase a cell phone to over 50% of the parents surveyed willing to purchase a Web-enabled phone in 2010 was one of the more striking statistics.
Three major trends discussed during the presentation were: mobile learning, online and blended learning and digital content. Group participation made for lively discussions on each trend area.
Propelling a higher level of interest in online education was attributed to three reasons (based on Project Tomorrow data):
1. increased technology familiarity by teachers and administrators
2. intensified demand by students and parents
3. personalized learning to promote student achievement for specific populations: home schooled, alternative education, English language learners, special education, gifted and talented, disenfranchised youth
Dr. Miller also provided a listing of free resources, research reports, and contact information related to online education you may find useful.
