With a focus on middle school and high school-age participants, the Verizon Innovative App Challenge is a collaborative competition created to encourage students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
This challenge, which offers $10,000 grants for winning schools and a Samsung Galaxy Tab for each winning team member, has been designed to engage students, provide them with valuable new skills and experiences and open their eyes to exciting new possibilities in STEM for their futures.
Who Can Participate
- This Challenge is open to both middle school and high school students.
- Schools form teams of 5–10 students per team.
- Teams must have at least one adult faculty member who will serve as team advisor and will register the school’s team(s).
- More than one team per school is allowed to participate. One team advisor may serve more than one team.
- Teams are encouraged to register their intent to participate as early as possible to receive updates about the Challenge and take advantage of resources available on the website.
How it works
Working with a faculty advisor, students in teams of 5-10 will develop an original concept for a mobile app that incorporates STEM and addresses a real need or problem in their school or community. Because students are judged solely on their submission of a unique and creative concept, Verizon hopes to pique the interest of those who otherwise would not participate in a technology challenge.
Registration for the Challenge opens on October 15th, and all submissions must be completed by January 18th, 2013.
The Verizon Innovative App Challenge is proudly sponsored by the Verizon Foundation in partnership with the Technology Student Association (TSA) and Samsung. To guide the students, Verizon’s Innovation Center engineers have created a set of instructional videos on app design and development that will be on the App Challenge website, www.verizonfoundation.org/appchallenge.
